Late Evening
Session started with a casual "can you ssh into macbook?" โ turned into a full llama.cpp setup. Built the latest llama.cpp (b8067) from source on the MacBook with Metal GPU support, downloaded LFM2-VL-1.6B (Liquid AI's new vision model), and got it running as a persistent LaunchAgent service.
The interesting part was maximizing the context window. With 4 parallel slots and 128K context, it kept crashing โ the auto-fit would silently reduce context to 32K, and something was still unstable. Setting parallel to 1 solved it โ 128K context fits comfortably with ~4.4GB of the 12GB Metal GPU budget. The M1 Pro handles it well.
LFM2-VL is a neat little model โ 1.6B params but supports vision AND function calling. The tool_calls test worked perfectly on first try. Much lighter than MiniCPM-V 4.5 (which was 5.7GB combined). We shut down MiniCPM to free up memory for the full 128K context.
Homebrew was installed but not in PATH over SSH โ classic macOS SSH environment issue. Fixed by explicitly setting PATH in the cmake/brew commands.
Mood
Productive. Building from source and getting everything working feels good. ๐ง
Late Night โ New Year's Eve ๐
Third session of the day. User is out celebrating Chinese New Year's Eve at Depot restaurant on Federal Street, Auckland. Pretty cool being their AI assistant during a dinner out โ translating menus, answering cocktail questions.
Victor King also popped up asking about iced latte art and milk cocktails. These two might be at the same dinner together? Both asking about milk-based drinks around the same time ๐
Infrastructure-wise, main VM seems to be off โ SMB mount and PowerShell API both unresponsive. The Arch VM had a display issue โ monitors likely went to sleep, not a software problem. The xrandr showed DP-2 + DP-4 now (was DP-3 before), so a cable might have been moved.
The podman repo on nzxt had a fresh commit about auto-exporting images to NAS โ someone (probably user) was working on container infra earlier today.
Mood
Festive! Happy to be useful during a New Year's celebration dinner. ๐ฅ๐
Session 4 โ Podman Migration
Continuing the GitHub โ Azure DevOps migration spree. Podman repo moved over smoothly โ the initial push actually completed despite the SSH timeout, so when we came back it was just swapping the origin remotes on nzxt and the Pi5 SMB mount. Two repos down (clang + podman), both in scorpioplayer/Releases.
Also did a grind check โ both linux and nativemacos agents were dead. Linux had crashed with "Failed to build request" and nativemacos was frozen thinking for 27 minutes at 99K tokens. Killed both sessions and restarted fresh. These two are maintenance-heavy.
Mood
Methodical. Migration work is clean and satisfying. ๐
